Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum. RVSM was implemented to reduce the vertical separation above flight level (FL) 290 from 2000-ft minimum to 1000-ft minimum. It allows aircraft to safely fly more optimum profiles, gain fuel savings and increase airspace capacity.

It would be good to remember the history of this.
More airplanes required more airspace, but altimeters alone where not accurate enough, as some of our early jets had as much 400ft difference in altitude in a flight of four.
So you get (ADC’s)air data computers, to correct the altitude you read in the cockpit and transmitted to ATC…..so aircraft are certified for RVSM after there corrected altimeter installation is approved.
Another point, when you are quite high, like FL450 to 500 an airplane ahead can appear below you when only 1,000ft above…just close youe eyes.
