At a flight school make sure that when you walk in the door you are greeted properly, you are going to spend a lot of money there and should be treated as such. Take a Discovery Flight, this will give the opportunity to evaluate their fleet. Is the aircraft clean? Are their plenty of aircraft on the line? If one goes into maintenance you do not want you lesson cancelled. If it is a private instructor what aircraft is he using? You might have to join a aero club for a/c access. Meet with the instructor and ask about his training syllabus. Do you like them? Remember you are going to be shoulder to shoulder for a lot of hours.

Making sure that you are more than just a source of revenue for the flight school is important. Having a good relationship with the flight instructor is vital to the success of your learning. Don’t cheat yourself if you feel the instructor doesn’t understand how you perceive and learn knowledge. Some people are visual learners, some are hands-on, others are textbook learners.
Also, make sure the instructor is doing his/her job by making sure that you are learning. If he/she doesn’t remember what you did on your last lesson, I would consider that a possible red flag.

I changed instructors about 3 times before I found the right one for me, and it was within the same flight school (awkward to say the least)but as Phillip indicated, you are go spend a lot of money and you should be treated as such.
