I recall VHS audio being a bit sketchy at times, been a while. However to get a good read on current product you can go to YouTube and check out King Schools video there and determine if the audio is up to par for you. You could also go to the King Schools website and get the free online course Non-Towered Airport Communications and evaluate the audio on that.

The current audio is much clearer than that of the VHS as the VHS audio and picture quality tends to wear overtime. But most importantly, King school updates their video content to the ever changing FAA regs. Thats why I began using their online courses because they are updated automatically.

The audio has improved quite a bit. The best part about the new courses are that you can plug a set of headphones into your computer and adjust the volume. I really like the online courses!
